Ride Cymbal Technique

Just wondered which is the better grip/option for playing fast tempos (say jazz beats) on the ride?

I've noticed that Vinnie in most cases uses his right hand with the palm facing downwards, towards the cymbals as though he was knocking on a door. I noticed the wrist coming more into play here. But can you obtain more speed/power by turning the wrist sideways on the ride?

I just can't seem to find a middle ground here!

Check out the Legends of Jazz Drumming Part two video and watch the Tony Williams segment in slow motion. His is the fastest ride cymbal beat you'll most likely ever hear. As for Vinnie's the concept seems to be one motion per three beats which if you watch the Tony segment you'll see the samw. Jack Dejohnette also has a similar concept. It involves opening up the hand and fingers for the first stroke then the second in made with the fingers and the third made as the hand and fingers close again. Hope this helps.
